Sarkozy prioritises internet regulation at G8 summit – Telegraph

The e-G8 event begins today and will bring together the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and chief executive, Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman, and Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s chief executive.
Sarkozy is expected to lead conversations around governance of the web, specifically focusing on increased regulation around copyright and privacy.
Last year the French government set up an independent commission in a bid to crack down on web piracy. The move was part of a continued tough stance from the country’s government as it attempts to protect copyright holders’ revenues.
However, Sarkozy is thought to be trying to open up dialogue with technology bosses, having recently acknowledged that the web economy has created 700,000 jobs in France alone over the last 15 years.
“The role of the state is to encourage laws to evolve to take account of the advances of technological innovation,” Sarkozy said last month.
The G8 summit begins on Thursday, during which the conclusions of the eG8 meeting will be presented and debated.
